Are your New Year’s Resolutions Still Good?

goal

We are now in the first week of the new year and I have to ask you:

“How many New Year’s resolutions have you broken already?

Most resolutions don’t survive for very long. Why?

You make the resolution without really committing to achieving it. You really don’t believe in it and therefore you ignore it during the day. This guarantees that it will fail.

You need to set achievable goals for your life. This is hard work and many people don’t do it. Sometimes they try but even then their goals never seem to be achieved. This can be caused by not knowing how to set good achievable goals.

Before you set your goal, you have to know what you want to achieve. This can be at a high level. It is a starting point. The plan isn’t developed and this actually may not be exactly what you actually want.

You can start by completing the following:

My family goal for this year is ____________

My career goal for this year is ____________

My health goal for this year is _____________

My relationship goal for this year is _____________

My financial goal for this year is ______________

My ___________ goal for this year is ______________

You next need to determine how long it will take you to achieve this goal. The goal you set above may be a little too general so you may need to rework it to make it specific and attainable this year. If it is too big, you will be overwhelmed before you even start, and you will likely give up on the goal.

Now you need to prioritize what goal you want to work on first. If you try to accomplish too many all at once, you will probably accomplish none of them to your satisfaction.

This is only the first step to achieving your goals this year. You now need to put a plan in place that you can follow.

You need to know how long the goal will take to accomplish. You may need to break it down into smaller more manageable goals.

Now you start to write your plan on how you will attain this goal. This must be detailed and specific. General steps won’t get you towards your goal.

While this is the start of the process, you still haven’t taken any steps towards attaining your goal.

Achieving goals is a a lot of work and a long process, for many long-term important life goals.
